Fittings

Clothing is an important form of nonverbal communication. The job of the custom fitter is to adapt your unique body language to the message you’d like your clothing to convey.

Fitting is simply measuring and analyzing your physique and formulating a pattern that helps you look your best. To create a Saint Laurie suit coat, we’ll analyze your posture, shoulder slope, ratios of chest to waist to hips, your height and age to decide, with your participation, how your jacket should fit.

Our custom trouser patterns also require a great deal of attention. Most importantly, we take into account the rise (the crotch to the waistband) that works best for you. It is usually different for your front and your rear. We also look at the proportions between your seat and your waist and balance that with the widths of the leg and cuff.

We’re often asked how many fitting sessions are required to achieve an ideal fit. Our answer is always, “as many as it takes.” For many customers, just one additional fitting after the initial measurements will be sufficient. For others, we will need to stop the construction in midstream and have an interim fitting. But you can rest assured that we are continually refining your pattern. If your body changes, your pattern will change as well.

Don’t let the fitting process scare you. It’s painless, we promise.
